Hidden cover

When walking across Prospect Park's Long Meadow the other day I stumbled across this mini cover installed in the ground. It's only about 15 inches across and below the level of grass and clover so impossible to see over 3 feet away. Whose initials were BID? What is under there? It's not a grate so it can't be for drainage, there isn't any electrical crossing the park. I believe if you managed to bring it up you would find something truly surprising. So surprising I can't even make it up. Perhaps an entire world that you are too large to enter but where all the persecuted animals of the park can escape to. This is where the raccoons, bunnies, chipmunks, squirrels, starlings pigeons redwing blackbirds sparrows red-tailed hawk and peregrine falcons go when they just can't take anymore. The herons can fly further away on their own.
